DVD Sale

Inspired by the emergence of Chinese pirate DVD sellers in London, DVD Sale consists of prints taken from pencil drawings that rework original DVD artwork. Based loosely around the translations or typos that may appear on pirated covers, I've subverted the titles to give different meanings to the films. The Lord of The Rings becomes The Lord Who Sings, suggesting religious undertones, whilst Shaving Ryan's Privates and Flesh Gordon take their names from adult movies. The Gangs series, using the artwork from The Gangs of New York refers to the recent spate of teenage deaths in London through gun and knife crime.

I wanted to look at cultural stereotyping since I am half Chinese and Thai, by selling these reworked DVD covers, which I began at the Art Car Boot Fair 2007 (www.artcarbootfair.com). My intention was to confront the stereotype of Chinese people selling DVDS by creating something new and independent of the original DVD rather than producing copies of an original.

The next stage of this project, which takes place here on this website, is for people to be able to download the covers and distribute as they please. In the same way pirated copies of films are circulated out of the control of the companies who own them. Please feel free to print them out, email them to your friends or upload them into the public domain. Thus you become an instigator in the dissemination and replication of my original artworks.

I will continue to sell the original artworks, signed in editions and packaged. However these downloadable copies are out there undermining the value of my originals. I'm attempting recreate the system of the original versus the copy to further explore the cultural issues brought to the fore by this project.
